ROBERTA INVERNIZZI, soprano, Italy
One of the most sought-after soloists in the field of baroque and classicist repertoire, the renowned artist is internationally recognised as a master of style and interpretation, precisely of Baroque music. She was born in Milan, where she used to learn how to play the piano and double bass before she discovered the preference for singing (studying with Margaret Heyward). Soon she began performing in many of the most important theatres in Europe, working with conductors such as Claudio Abbado, Rinaldo Alessandrini, Giovanni Antonini, Fabio Biondi, Ivor Bolton, Franz Bruggen, Alan Curtis, Ottavio Dantone, Gustavo Dudamel, Antonio Florio, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Ton Koopman, Gustav Leonhardt and Jordi Savall. The ensembles with which the soprano regularly co-operates are the Viennese Concentus Musicus, Mozart Orchestra, Accademia Bizantina, Il Giardino Armonico, Cappella de la Pieta dei Turchini, Concerto Italiano, Europa Galante, Ensemble Matheus, Venetian Baroque Orchestra, I Barocchisti, etc. She performed twice at the Teatro alla Scalla in Milan (in Handel’s Rinalda and in Monteverdi’s Orpheus), and the great maestro Arnonkur chose her as the participant in the celebration of the 200th anniversary of the Vienna Musikverein. In the famous Konzerthaus hall in the same city, she contributed to the celebration of the 20th anniversary of the Resonance Festival with her recital Roberta Invernizzi and Friends. She is also a regular guest of the Salzburg Festival where, at various stages, she interprets solo sections in capital opera and vocal-instrumental works (Handel’s El Trionfo del Tempo, Mozart’s Mass in C minor, and Jommelli’s Isacco). In Vienna Musikverein she sang the role of Magdalena in Handel’s spiritual oratorio La Resurrezione, and in Karlsruhe the role of Medea in his opera Teseo. At Handel’s Festival in Halle and the Royal Opera in Versailles she was hired to sing Oriana in the opera Amadigi of the same composer. Significant contracts are also connected with London (recital of Mozart’s music, Handel’s Giulio Cesare), Madrid (Handel’s Agrippina), Paris, Naples (the main role in the Cavalli’s Statira in the San Carlo Theater), Spain, and Venice.
With Mozart’s works, Roberta Invernizzi often performs at the above-mentioned famous festival in Salzburg (under the leadership of Abbado), and in Vienna and Graz (Styriarte Festival) with Nikolaus Arnonkur. Among the works of George Friedrich Handel, to presentation of whom she contributes with exceptional success and for which she is the best known, we could single out Adriano in Siria (Madrid and Valencia), Teseo (Karlsruhe), Saul (Vienna), and Giulio Cesare (Toulon). She has made over 100 sound recordings of which many of the world’s premier performances have been recorded for the companies Sony, Deutsche Grammophon, EMI/Virgin, Naive, Glossa, Opus 111 and Symphonia. A significant number of these recordings have received praiseworthy reviews in magazines dedicated to music and medals such as the annual Diapason D ‘Or, Choc du Monde de la Musique, Goldberg’s Five Star, as well as the German Gramophon Awards, etc. Nevertheless, of special significance are the Midem Classical Awards and the prestigious Stanley Award for the best annual Handel music edition, which she received for the interpretation of Italian Cantatas published by Glossa with which she has a long-lasting co-operation. For the same partner, she also recorded albums dedicated to Vivaldi and Faustini Bordoni, as well as the compact disc La Bella piu Bella, which was also acclaimed by the international critics.
FABIO CIOFINI, harpscihord/cembalo, artistic director, Italy
The artistic director of the Accademia Hermans ensemble studied organ, piano and forte piano at the Conservatory in Perugia in classes of W. Van de Pol, M. F. Spaventi and C. Veneri, and a harpsichord/cembalo with A. Fedi at the Music School in the Tuscan city of Fiesole near Florence. He continued learning the organ at J. P Sweelinck Conservatory in Amsterdam in the class of J. Van Oortmerssen, and in 1999 he completed his postgraduate studies in early music. Already in 1995, he was appointed the “honorary organ player” (Organist titulaire) in Collescipoli at the historical baroque instrument of W. Herman from 1678. His interpretations of compositions written in the period from the 16th to the 18th century are widely respected, and he regularly appears as a soloist in Italy, The Netherlands, Poland, Switzerland, Spain, Germany, Hungary, France, England, Norway, Finland, Sweden, and outside Europe in the United States. He is very active in a duo with baroque violinist Enrico Gatti, as well as performer of basso continuo in the Aurora Ensemble. He is also highly involved in numerous classes and master classes (in Javea in the Spanish province of Alicante, at the International Baroque Music Festival in the same country, then in master classes at the Chico State University in California and at the State University of Seattle in Washington, as well as at the Oundle International Festival (in the same named city in England, about a hundred kilometres north of London), where he holds master classes in organ. Ciofini recorded for Bottega Discantica label from Milan and Loft Recordings from Seattle. Fabio Ciofini also works as a director, founder and conductor of the Accademia Hermans ensemble and the Cantorum School at St. Benedict Monastery in Norcia, the birthplace of Saint Benedict in the Italian province of Perugia. He is the artistic director of the Hermans and Villa Solomei Festivals. Fabio performs continuously as soloist and chamber musician in Italy, throughout Europe and the USA. He lectures at the G. Briccialdi Conservatory in Terni, and for eighth years now he has been an artistic director of the Cucinelli Foundation.
ACCADEMIA HERMANS, Italy
Founded in 2000, the ensemble with its artistic director and initiator Fabio Ciofini celebrates its maturity this year. Transferring his enthusiasm and love for old music onto numerous young instrumentalists and singers educated at the best European schools, Ciofini has shaped an interesting and rare repertoire, representing it and expanding it equally in Italy and internationally. Co-operating with famous artists such as Enrico and Marcello Gatti, Gloria Banditelli, Sergio Foresti, Mirko Guadagnini, Robert Invernizzi, Bart Van Oort, Roberta Mameli and others, Accademia Hermans recorded for Bongiovanni label the cycle of six orchestral pieces (Concerti Armonici) of the Dutch composer and diplomat Unico Willem Van Wassenaer (1692 – 1766) using a critical edition of these works (long attributed to another author) by Professor Albert Dunning together with the L’Orfeo Ensemble Di Spoleto. With the participation of the organist Luca Scandali, Ciofini’s ensemble published the selection of symphonies and organ concerts by Gaetano Valeri under the Tactus label. Two compact discs were released after that in the production of the Bottega Discantica company: Il piu misero amante, which was recorded in the hall of the Palazzo Castelli di Polino in Terni decorated with frescoes, was released in 2006, and a CD with the music by Vivaldi (Gloria, Stabat Mater and Dixit Dominus) in 2008. A year later, again in Terni, they recorded the selection of concerts for various instruments by George Phillip Teleman, which they performed at the Parco in Musica festival held at the St. Peter’s Cathedral in that city. The Solomeo Church in Perugia was an ideal place to perform and record Mozart’s Requiem and his Piano Concertos K.466 and K.467 with maestro Bart Van Oort. That disc from 2011, released again by Bottega Discantica, was rated with exceptional 5 stars in the Magazine Musica. As early as July 2012, Accademia Hermans offered to Brilliant Classic a recording of the live performance of Scherzi Musicali by Abbot Agostino Steffani, an artist from the 17th century, they played at the Bolcano Festival. For several years, the ensemble has been promoting old music throughout the province of Umbria by organizing courses and recording of authentic sound carriers at various historical sites (palaces and churches), providing for organisation and artistic leadership for two festivals: Parco in Musica in Valnerina and Musica e Musei in the large museums of the Umbrian region. In addition to concerts for most of the prestigious associations and festivals of old music, both in Italy and abroad (The Netherlands and the USA), the Accademia Hermans ensemble regularly co-operates with the festivals Villa Solomei and the residential orchestra of the Cucinelli Theater in Solomeo di Corciano area of Perugia.
